Level 119: Payday

We came in under on fuel and added the regular $14 from savings. The total deposit was $89.62. This was a nice way to finish August!

Stay tuned for a post summarizing the month of August.

I was telling someone about the game I made up and how it’s working out. She said it won’t work out because I won’t be able to use the entire balance each time to level up 5%. It would just be too hard to track and take too long to do.

Whaaaaaat??? I just nodded and played nice. Her negative tone told me she wasn’t interested in being interested so I dropped it.

You and I know better. We know a power up (a smaller deposit than what is needed to level up) is still money and it still boosts the overall percent growth each month. It also makes it more likely we’ll level up the next time more money surfaces.

On another front, I had $504 when I bought the case of RTIC tumblers. That order cost $321. I have gotten back 30.8% more than the money spent so far. I’m not a math professor but that is more than 5% on significantly less than the total balance. I didn’t plan for that to happen. It just did and we’re delighted with the way it’s playing out.

Don’t let people tell you this can’t work becaues it will be too hard as the balance grows. There’s no rule that you have to invest the entire balance each time. Just work on the level you are on without stressing about it. As you play the game, your mind and your focus on leveling up will help you see things you can do. This game doesn’t have a time limit. Obviously the faster you level up, the faster you can reap the rewards. If you are having fun, you’ll want to keep playing and that will get you there faster.

When your balance gets bigger, you may hit on something that works well to bring in more money. Your balance will get even bigger but that doesn’t mean you have to stop what’s working. It just means you may have to do it more often. Let’s say you you do so well at buying and selling new starter homes that you quickly come into a lot more money. That doesn’t mean you have to start selling luxury homes. You could but if you are happy where you are, just buy and sell more starter homes.

There may be hurdles and problems as your money grows. Those are good problems people!! Those kinds of problems have answers.

Power-up update: We had a little left from last week and decided to power-up. $16.69 was deposited in the Money Game today.

Level 118: 5 Paydays Coming in September

September starts to ease off on the power bill. It’s also a 5 payday month. So I did what any self-respecting crazy saving woman would do. I nailed down the savings by grabbing the extra week’s allocation now.

$75 was deposited into savings completing Level 118 and giving Level 119 a small power-up.

Please don’t think “I don’t make much money so I could never grow money at that rate.” I honestly believe that concentrating on the goal of growing that first $5 just 5% at a time gets you to focus on a challenging yet achievable goal. Ideas will come to you and I don’t think they will work the same for each person. You may find that idea along the way that jets you further and faster than the rest of us. At each level you’ll have more to work with.

Level 117: 78 degrees

We keep our thermostat on 78 degreees during the summer. When I feel too hot (I’m home during the heat of the day), I go outside and work in the yard for a few minutes. We’ve never been miserable.

The power bill just came. I admit I scraped a few dollars from that category here and there during the month when I was close to leveling up. We still came in under budget by $83.16. I was pretty sure we’d be under by $20. I never know during these peak months. August is pretty warm here in north Georgia.

This is a good time to mention what I would do if I wanted to cash in. My “rule” for this game is that I can’t touch what’s already in our Money Game fund. But as I find or make new money, it’s our choice if we spend it or put it in the Money Game fund. If there was something I really wanted or needed that cost $83 or less, we’d talk about it (same goes for George of course). Right now our budget has everything covered. If I want or need new clothes or whatever, it’s in our regular budget. What I really want is an alternate income stream.

Your goal may be completely different. A friend of mine that I get to see every week in real life says her goal is to replace her income. She was excited to see that she doesn’t even have to get to level 250. Once she hits that lower level that returns her income, she just has to work on the frequency. Meanwhile it gives her hope because she something tangible to do to help make it happen.

You can make this your story. Budget with enough cushion to cover your bills the day they come due. Take what’s left and put it in your own Money Game fund. As that money grows, start learning what you can do personally to make your money grow.

Don’t get hung up on selling versus saving

I’m getting messaged privately and the discussions make me realize what I’m learning. This particular message came to me over a week ago. (There have been others and I’ll post more on those soon.) The writer felt perhaps the game wasn’t valid because the original $5 didn’t earn the rest of the money.

I do think the real value of this game is learning to make money. That was what pushed me to start this. If I could just make twenty five cents, then I could push myself to make more. I have made money this month by selling and it was a great experience. It was fun and easier than I imagined. I’m so glad I did that.

But I’m still stunned at how much we’re able to save by being careful with our food budget. I just couldn’t get control of the budget before and it’s not only done a 180, it’s served up so much more money than I would have thought. It doesn’t matter how much you make if you can’t control it. There will never be enough (think of lottery winners who often end up broke.) I needed this lesson.

We are all different. We’re wired in different ways and we have different needs. If you are reading this and if you’re inspired, let me encourage you to just start playing the game with $5 in whatever way feels right to you. Don’t lose sight of the “game”. (Have you ever played Monopoly with someone who took it so seriously they ruined the evening for everyone?”) I think that’s the most important this experience has taught me.

Be a kid again. Capture that sense of play and even that sense of wonder as it starts to work. Take that fun and carry it back to your day to day work wherever and whatever that is.

I started to get hung up wondering if I should stop adding savings and “make” myself only add earned money. For a second, it wasn’t fun any more. I did sell when the opportunity presented itself and I want to do that again very badly. That was a blast!! But this isn’t about having a sales quota.

So I’m grabbing each day as it comes and taking advantage of any extra money that presents itself. I still can’t believe how often I see it. This is a blast!

Levels 115 & 116: Coming in under on payday

Payday means a regular payday helping ($14 a week) and grabbing everything that came in under budget. $89.41 deposited today. Very big smile.

It’s not too early to start looking at land that’s for sale. I’ve already identified the hottest growing county close by but I’m wondering if I should extend that to include Atlanta?

Real estate is all about location and I want time to learn everything I can about the best locations to invest. George has promised me we can start driving around Ooltewah, Tennessee when we’re in Chattanooga anyway. I want to educate myself now so that when we do have the cash to buy, we’ll be able to recognize a great buy.

I looked at Realtor.com today and saw a nice 2 acre lot in Ooltewah for about $10k. I looked at the map and noticed it’s in a residential neighborhood close to the Interstate just north of it. That made me wonder if it’s too close to commercial areas (the Volkswagon plant is nearby) to be desirable as a lot for residential building. The price looks great but there’s probably a reason for that.

Level 114: A $70 day

Note: These updates on our own Money Game progress are meant to help you see how we’re actually leveling up and hopefully inspire you to play along.

I sold 4 RTIC tumblers and found $10 in my wallet. $70 was deposited completing Level 114 and a good chunk of Level 115. Yesterday I was so happy to level up and thought it might be a few more days before it would happen again. Today was a surprise that caught me off guard.

There are 2 RTICs left (but if people ask I’ll sell the ones I put back for Christmas and then order another case). The cash received from the first 20 went to pay for the order. The last 10 are pure profit and I’m loving it. So will you! Find a great deal on something your friends want. Then let them in on it.

Next up: Level 115
$66.11 is needed for that level and thanks to the big deposit today, I’m almost there!

State Farm gives us a Power Up

Note: These updates on our own Money Game progress are meant to help you see how we’re actually leveling up and hopefully inspire you to play along.

The six month bill for my car insurance came. My car is getting older and I’m driving safely. Bottom line – the rate came down a bit and I get to deposit another $40 into our Money Game fund. It’s not enough to level up but it’s a huge boost. $21.34 is needed to reach the next level. These power ups are such a boost and make leveling up easy.

Level 113: Keeping my eye on the budget

A regular savings amount that goes to the Money Game fund each week ($14) along with a bit of food and home maintenance funds that came in under budget means we get to level up with a deposit of $59.11. We are now working on Level 114. There are 136 levels remaining in our race to a million.

The next level requires $62.96 and there was a little leftover from this deposit to kick it off. The next big milestone for me will be knocking out level 125. In a way it seems far off, but it’s only a thousand dollars more. That doesn’t seem like so much money now yet I know it is.

I wish there was a way to predict what will happen and if and when our progress will slow down or speed up even more. The only thing I know so far is that it’s a lot more fun than I would have thought. I don’t wake with dread wondering how I’ll level up. I wake up excited knowing something will probably happen even if it’s just a power up or a new thought on how how to grow money.

Two more RTIC tumbers have been paid for. Four more have been spoken for; we just need to get together. That leaves 2. It’s going a bit slower this week than I hoped but I also volunteered over 40 hours for the children’s ministry at our church. Yesterday was promotion Sunday and there was a ton of work to do behind the scenes to get everything ready for the big day. It was a success and I feel great about the way I chose to use my time.

So far, the project has returned 12% to us over the $321 we spent. If all 30 sell, that will be a 40% profit. I am very happy with these numbers. It wasn’t much work at all and I haven’t done anything to market the tumblers other than make that one announcement on a private FaceBook moms page.

I still haven’t started posting things on our local FaceBook yard sale page. I’m posting it here to keep myself accountable and to get moving on this! There’s money to be made and it’s time for me to get to work.

Finally, I’m trying to decide if I should buy another case of RTIC tumblers. I’m leaning to yes. Christmas is coming and I can post on my FaceBook wall. I can also have the tumblers shipped to family in Tennessee and not have to pay sales tax. That would make them more profitable.

My point is that for this first project, making at least a 5% profit on a relatively small amount of money was easy to do. I honestly don’t know if they would have been any easier to sell had I priced them lower.

One other point is that you don’t have to use the whole balance of your Money Game fund. Just keep adding to your fund; you’ll probably make more than 5% anyway.
Does this help you see how making money with some money works? As you read, if you have ideas, advice or suggestions, please sound off in the comments. I’m starting to get messaged about what I’m writing here so I know some people are interested. What can we do to help each other grow our money faster than we could have dreamed?
