A treasured gift (and a lesson on giving)

It’s not pefect and it probably didn’t cost a lot. It was a wedding gift and I treasure it for many reasons – most of all because I treasure the friend who gave it to me.

Each year we decorate our tree and smile when we come to it. It reminds me of our wedding and of our happy days spent at the University of Tennessee where we met, married and lived as a couple in married student housing for a semester before George graduated.

It also reminds me that Christmas doesn’t have to mean a pile of debt and bills. People who love you don’t want you to have to carry a huge burden to remember them at a special time. If you look around, you can find something worth giving and worth having that doesn’t cost a fortune. Even a simple hand made soap wrapped in a sleeve of brown kraft paper, tied with twine and decorated with a snip of greenery is enough to bring a smile.

If Christmas stresses you out with a need to give nice (read “expensive”) gifts, take time to think of simple things that you enjoy. Chances are your friends would enjoy them too.
